Saturday Night Donating! Supporting Racial Equality ❤
If lock-down is causing a little money trouble but you'd still like to get involved with Black Lives Matter, or if you've suggested to somebody that they should donate but they need a little push - READ THIS.
Prelude: For more information on the Black Lives Matter Movement, it's history and what it's doing for people in 2020, click the image below before you read on:
Appreciating that lock-down hasn't made it easy for people to help out as much as they could, I've thought of a way that people can do so from home - combining donating, lock-down and the pub.
(Remember, it doesn't matter HOW you get people to donate, or how much an individual can donate, the act of donating, and how the money is being used to help people in need is what's important)
FIRST
You need a list of who you'd like to donate to, here are a few examples:
George Floyd Memorial Fund
Black Visions Donations
Reclaim the Block
Minnesota Freedom Fund
Ahmaud Arbery Memorial Fund
Black Lives Matter
Show Racism the Red Card
Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI)
Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust
Race Equality Foundation
THEN
You need a list of local pubs that you go to, if you don't go the pub then 1) why? and 2) use your local coffee shops instead (or somewhere that you visit regularly to drink, smoothie bar etc.) Mine are:
Prince of Wales
White Lion
Royal Oak
Propaganda
Prince Arthur, Wetherspoon
The Wyvern
The Botanist
Victoria
Queen Hotel
The George
If you can't think of very many then just repeat the ones you have!
NEXT
You need to think of what your first 3 drinks at each place would be, do you stick to the same drink or do you mix things up? Do the prices at each pub vary? Are there certain drinks you can get at one pub but not at another? Either way, mine would go a little something like this:
Prince of Wales - the only place that sells my favourite cider, Brothers Rhubarb! My first 2 drinks would be 2 Rhubarb Ciders at £2.50 each, then a Palma Violet Gin & Tonic at £4, so my first 3 drinks would come to £9.
White Lion - My first 3 drinks would be 3 Raspberry & Apple Gin and Lemonade's at £4 each, so £12 for 3.
And so on.
FINALLY
Each Saturday that you can't go to the pub (and each Saturday that you can go to the pub if you'd like) donate the money that you'd typically spend on your first 3 drinks, to your chosen Fund.
This estimates how much you're typically saving on drinks during lock-down in a way that makes you excited for when lock-down is over and you can return to reality, and MOST IMPORTANTLY it donates what you're saving to the people that really need it. For some people it's difficult to just want to give money - so maybe picking the list of funds that they'd like to donate to can educate them more, or getting them thinking about a night at the pub shows them that they're very lucky to be able to just go on a night out without the fear of being mistreated and possibly arrested for the colour of their skin.
Remember, it doesn't matter HOW you get people to donate, or how much an individual can donate, the act of donating, and how the money is being used to help people in need is what's important.
